Pop Warner Cheerleading Competition

Pop Warner cheerleaders who participate in the Pop Warner cheerleading competition every year are not like your ordinary cheerleader who is just good at cheering. They are outstanding scholars as well as participating at cheer activities – and it doesn’t end there. Let’s find out what a Pop Warner cheerleader is really all about and why you should be one too!

The nonprofit organization Pop Warner Little Scholars (PWLS) brings cheer programs in 42 states and more than a few countries from all over the globe and organizes the Pop Warner cheerleading competition. It was founded back in 1929 and it also provides dance and football programs for young athletes. PWLS is said to be the biggest dance, cheer and football program within the US, gathering about 400,000 young athletes aged between 5 and 16.

After its establishment, the organization grew and required all participants to maintain required academic standards in order to qualify. Since most programs don’t imply any academic standards, this separates PWLS from other programs worldwide and makes it one of the best sports program for young athletes. Pop Warner cheerleadera are unique!

The Pop Warner Cheerleaders Philosophy – School and Sports

PWLS believes that school knowledge and academics go hand in hand with athletic accomplishments. Thus the Pop Warner Little Scholars organization strives to help young people develop and grow both on the field and sport performances and off, with regard to their academic knowledge. By each year, this organization expands within the community and increases its visibility in order to reach youngsters and help them succeed with their sports passion.

Pop Warner believes that being a cheerleader isn’t the only thing that’s important for a young man or woman. Apart from learning the basics and insides and learning to become the best in a competitive environment, PWLS also offers them the possibility of having fun with good results in school for a brighter future.

Growing as a Young Pop Warner Cheerleader with PWLS

The Pop Warner Little Scholars nonprofit organization focuses on offering young people the opportunity to grow, develop and learn in an environment that’s both structured and safe. The organization strives to teach participants values that are fundamental in life, knowledge that they will need one day and skills that will set them apart from the rest.

Through its programs and championships, such as the Pop Warner cheerleading competition, PWLS brings a safe, fun, competitive and opportunistic environment for children and young people who are constantly reminded about the importance of good academic results. Cheerleaders who participate in Pop Warner competitions and programs are always one step ahead of other cheerleaders.

PWLS Mission and Objectives

Irrespectively of race, origins, creed and ideals, the Pop Warner Little Scholars is inspiring young Pop Warner cheerleaders ever since 1929. This nonprofit organization encourages young people to engage in fun activities such as cheerleading, dance and football, while also ensuring a safe and positive environment for all children.

Apart from inspiring and educating children in sportsmanship, with the help of the PWLS young cheerleaders also learn to value team work and gain understanding with regard to ‘working hard’ not only in the field, cheering, but also in the class room. Pop Warner does not rely on tryouts or cutting of roosters, but it does require every participant to obey the rules, whereas awards for individual members are solely given away for excellent academic results, and not for good performance on the field.

In order to provide a safe environment for all participants, the PWLS requires mandatory equipment to be worn and also provides risk management training for young people and coaching clinics.

2011 Cheerleading Competition Pop Warner Little Scholars

The Pop Warner cheerleading competition 2011 that goes under the name of Pop Warner National Cheer and Dance Championships is organized each year by the Pop Warner Little Scholars Organization. In the last 10 years, the cheering competitions were held in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, at the end of each year, in December’s second week.

The Pop Warner National Cheer & Dance Championships lasts for five days, during which more than 500 cheer and dance teams compete against each other. In this cheerleading competition there are three categories – Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced –, two team sizes – Small and Large -, and four age categories – Jr. Pee Wee, Pee Wee, Jr. Midget and Midget. The last Pop Warner cheerleading competition took place between December 4 and December 11 at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex.

NCA Cheer Competitions

Even today, the NCA is still a leading name in the industry with regard to NCA cheer competitions for cheerleading and camps, special events and prizes awarded at these cheering competitions. The National Cheerleading Association (NCA) is the first cheerleading company which was founded back in 1948 by Lawrence Herkimer.

The Story Behind the NCA Cheer

The founder of the National Cheerleading Association was a male SMU cheerleader named Lawrence Herkimer. He cheered and raised the teams’ spirit, and he was preponderantly known for his jump, the ‘Herkie’ jump. In 1948, Herkimer began to teach young cheerleaders what he knew at a camp organized at the Sam Huston State Teachers College in Texas, Huntsville.

Starting with that 1984 camp, the NCA cheer story started to shape out. But apart from the well-regarded cheer camps that evolved to nowadays, the NCA was also the first company to manufacture uniforms for cheerleaders, under the name of the Cheerleading Supply Company. The authenticity of NCA stands in mostly everything used in cheerleading today, from pompons and Spirit Ribbons and Sticks, and down to the famous ‘Herkie’ jump that all cheerleading teams perform.

The Purpose behind NCA Cheerleading Competitions

The NCA cheerleading nationals championships are organized with the main purpose of offering cheerleading teams to compete in a well-thought through and organized manner that come with these top-rated competitions. The NCA cheerleading competitions aren’t merely for creating and promoting a strong school cheer and spirit, but they’re also organized in a fair and professional manner in order to provide participants with an atmosphere that only stimulates the teams’ competitive spirit more.

The NCA also comes before the main purpose of cheerleading, which is to promote that previously-mentioned team spirit and cheer. Thus, within many NCA cheer championships, the Game Day division was introduced. This division is also included in the NCA national competitions, therefore providing cheer teams with the change of doing what they do on the sidelines.

Cheer Competitions by the NCA in 2011

The NCA cheerleading competitions taking place in 2011 are numerous and with the New Year, the NCA also bring a new form of filling in registration forms and sending them in. For 2010 and 2011, the NCA implemented a more convenient system which allows participants to easily and electronically fill in registration forms, save them to PDFs and e-mail them as attachments or print and fax or mail them to the Association.

On January 8 and 9, the NCA Senior and Junior High School National Championship will take place in Dallas, Texas, at the Dallas Convention Center, and there’s also a video registration available for it. The NCA All-Star National Cheer Championship, on the other hand is scheduled for February 26-27, 2011, also at the Dallas Convention Center. On March 5th, 2011, the NCA High School Open National Championship will go down at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville, Kentucky. Later in spring, The NCA and NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championship will amaze fans on the Daytona Beach, in Florida, between April 6 and April 10, at The Band Shell, Ocean Center.

The Classic and US/International NCA Cheer Competitions

On January 9, 2011, at the Family Arena in St. Charles, Missouri, the NCA/NDA St. Louis Classic is set to receive contestants. The Lakeland Center, in Lakeland, Florida, will also host the NCA and NDA Sunshine Classic on January 22. The NCA and NDA Oklahoma Classic and the NCA and NDA Atlanta Classic are taking place on February 5-6 at the Cox Convention Center, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and at the Gwinnett Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, respectively.

But apart from the NCA cheer competitions, the National Cheerleading Association also organizes a Summer Camp which is said to be the best in the area, with one-on-one buddy instructors, reliable coaches training, new and fresh stunts learned, innovative dances, chants and cheers, unequaled team bonding and the opportunity of picking a camp that’s located near the participant’s home since the NCA has camps all across the United States.

high school cheerleading competitions

HS Cheerleading Competitions

There is nothing wrong in having a great desire to win prizes through high school cheerleader competitions. However, you must understand that you are not the only one to have such a desire. Most cheerleaders who decide to become a member of the cheerleading team does so because of the glamour and style associated with the art. Winning a high school cheerleading competition is considered the ultimate proof that one is a very good cheerleader.

So, the first thing that you should understand is that the high school cheer competitions are going to be very tough and that you will have to perform out of your skin to win. If you have any doubts, just check out television that show teams preparing for these cheering competitions. You will find that they work with the same level of synchronization and practice as professional dancers. Of course, you will be a student and you cannot afford to ignore your studies as well. In fact, most schools place minimum requirements and specifications for all members of the cheerleading team as far as exam and grades are concerned just for this very same reason.

All cheerleading competitions for high school have a different set of rules which must be understood in full. It is important to go through the rules because you should focus on not only what you cannot do but also on what you can do. Good interpretation of these rules can help you put up a wonderful performance during the high school cheerleading competition while other teams lag behind because they did not understand the rules rightly.

The second step is to work towards the formation of the team as early as possible. If you want to win a prize in a high school cheerleading competition, you will have to make the task of formation of the team as your business. Of course, you will be required to work under a teacher or a professor. However, you cannot afford to relax even for a moment. Building a team will not be an easy task and it requires a lot of hard work. Make sure that your team works as a well oiled and functional unit when the ultimate moment comes.

Once the team is prepared the next step to progress in high school cheering competitions is to have the right set of cheerleading moves. You need to be graceful, smooth, effective and stylish all at the same time. It goes without saying that you cannot ignore safety. Coming up with fancy cheer moves and cheerleader stunting that can create injury risk is just not acceptable in championships today.

Once you have completed the basic administrative tasks, the next step is to start practicing. There is no exception to this rule that’s for sure. You will have to practice and keep on practicing until the performance is perfect. You will have to bear exertion, physical strain and you will have to work beyond your cheerleader boundaries. The important thing here is that you should focus on not just yourself but on all your team members and strenthen all your weakest links. Each and every member of the team should strain to proceed ahead. Only then will you have a chance of winning the prize.

Finally, winning high school cheerleading competitions requires not just practice but big stage temperament as well. The last thing you want is to perform well during your preliminaries but freeze when you reach the big stage. This is where proper practice and execution comes in and it will take over and deliver for you when needed most at all your HS cheerleading competitions you participate in.

Cheering Competitions

Seeing as the new year is here it’s only fair to start preparing and see what cheering competitions will be taking place – and their are some big cheerleading competitions 2011 scheduled. Although cheerleading has just started to gain popularity worldwide, in the United States there are numerous cheer competitions held every year from some big cheering sponsors.

Cheerleading Competitions Background

Before getting into 2011 cheerleading competitions, a few facts about cheerleading will be given that may be of interest to you. Not many cheerleaders know that this sport or dance that has become an American tradition has been around for only a little over a century now. Cheerleading began in the 1900s and it was, at first, a male only sports activity, although that seems hard to believe – right girls?.

Things changed in the 1920s when females were allowed to participate and become cheerleaders. However, cheerleading has also experienced an evolution, since at the beginning it only was about a cheer crowd. The dance routines and athletically correct jumps together with the encouraging verbal chants and cheers came only thereafter along with all the many cheering competitions held throughout the country today.

Cheering Competitions in 2011

January of 2011 will bring quite a few cheer competitions for cheerleaders in the United States. These cheerleading competitions are taking place in different states of the U.S. and have different organizers. Respectively, the same rules don’t apply to all, so if you want to make sure that you or your team can participate, then access their websites for more information on registration, fees and rules.

Cheering Competitons from Fabulous 50’s Open and Holiday Championship McAllen by American Cheer Power

This is one of the top cheerleading competitions that will take place in 2011. It’s organized by the American Cher Power, who has been in the cheerleading business for 25 years as of 2010. The organization started as a local Texas Association at first, in 1985, and was founded by Regina Symons and called the Cheer Power Texas Cheerleading Association Inc., with only two cheerleading competitions.

The association grew later on, turning into a state championship and, in 1994, into a national event that is now known as American Cheer Power, which later united with cheer company Varsity in 2008. Apart from the awards in cash, the competitions for cheering organized by American Cheer Power also give each national champion a leather letter jacket.

Locations and Details for American Cheer Power Cheerleader Competitions

This championship is, as the name states, a 50’s competition. The cheering competition is open to both teams and individuals and will take place at the McAllen Convention Center in Teas. However, Fabulous 50’s cheerleading competitions 2011 will also take place in other states such as Oklahoma, Maryland, West Virginia, Florida, New Jersey, Ohio and Pennsylvania. For a complete list of these cheer competitions, their dates and locations, and other competitions for cheerleading organized by American Cheer Power, check the link provided at the end.

Prizes Offered at American Cheer Power Cheerleading Competitions

With regard to prizes, the American Cheer Power has both items, such as jackets and rings, and trophies and medal up for grabs. But, there are cash prizes as well. For example, the All-Star Cheer program awards amount $1,000 for each small gym and large gym national grand champions that have the two, and five respectively, highest combined scores.

On the other hand, high point champions who come up on every level, regardless of large or small category gyms can receive a cash prize of $500. The National Grand Champion with the highest School/Rec. score will also get $250 and The Dance National Grand Champion who after 4 routines has the highest combined 4-score will also get a $500 cash award.

The American Cheer Power is not the only one organizing cheerleading competitions in 2011. The COA Cheer & Dance has scheduled numerous cheering competitions at high schools in Ohio. What’s truly amazing about this is that the COA Cheer & Dance together with the Shirley A. Wedge National Cheerleading and Dance Scholarship Fund have come together for COA’s scholarship program, which up until now has awarded more than $400,000 in scholarships to cheerleaders and dance athletes.
